Morning Market Pulse — Don't Trust This Bounce

Futures are flashing green, but the internals tell a different story – I'm watching for the floor to drop out.

Today's pre-market action feels like a trap. We're seeing some nominal green on the headline futures, but dig a layer deeper, and the setup is still leaning bearish. The crowd is quick to pile into any bounce, but this one smells like distribution.

The Tape Doesn't Lie

Overnight and into the pre-market, the S&P 500 (SPY) is down 0.31% from its open. That's not a massive drop, but it's telling when coupled with what's happening under the hood. The real tell? VIXY, the volatility ETF, jumped 7.87% intraday. That's a serious pop for implied volatility, and it rarely happens when the path of least resistance is up. Someone's paying up for protection, and it's not the retail guys chasing a weak bounce.

Where the Crowd Gets It Wrong

Everyone loves a comeback story, but sometimes a bounce is just a dead cat. We've got 17 mega-cap names up against 6 down, which on the surface looks decent. But remember, the big money often uses these nominal strength days to offload positions into liquidity. They're selling into the strength, not buying it. The easy money was made on the way down; chasing here is just funding someone else's exit.

My read on this is straightforward: the market is trying to lure buyers in. It's offering just enough positive headline to mask the underlying weakness. I don't trust it. The volatility bid is too strong, and the overall regime score points to continued downside. We hit our pre-market call dead on, expecting a negative open, and that's what we got.

What I'm Watching at the Open

When the bell rings, I'm watching two things:

  • Follow-through on VIXY: Does that volatility bid hold? If it cools off, maybe this bounce has legs. But if it keeps climbing, expect more downside pressure on the broader market.
  • The 200-day moving average: This is a key technical level for the major indices. If we can't hold it, or if we break below it on any real volume, that's your signal to tighten up your stops or sit on your hands. I'd want to see conviction buying there before even considering a long position.

Don't get sucked into the emotional pull of a weak green open. The smart money is waiting for clarity, or better yet, more weakness to get properly positioned. This isn't the time to be a hero; it's the time to be patient.
