Morning Market Pulse — Don't Trust This VIX Pop

Futures are up, but a quick VIX spike hints at a trap for the unsuspecting.

Futures are pushing higher this morning, with the SPY up a solid 3.02% from its open to now. That's a decent bid, and news sentiment is flashing green with a +0.41 bullish lean across 184 headlines. The crowd's mood is definitely pointed up.

Where the Gamma Gets Sticky

Digging into the options flow, we're seeing strong positive gamma at $+2.6 billion. This is a crucial read. Positive gamma means market makers are net long options, and they tend to hedge by buying the underlying asset as prices rise, and selling as prices fall. It creates a dampening effect on volatility, essentially putting a floor under rallies and a ceiling on pullbacks.

Right now, that GEX (gamma exposure) is a tailwind for this morning's move. It suggests if we keep climbing, those dealers will keep adding to their longs, reinforcing the upward momentum. The market likes to take the path of least resistance, and right now, that path is up.

The VIX Tells a Different Story

Here's the rub. While everything else points higher, the VIXY (an ETF tracking VIX futures) is up 2.40% intraday. That's the uncomfortable truth in this data. VIXY shouldn't be rising when the market is rallying this hard, especially with such strong positive gamma. It's like seeing smoke when there's no fire — or rather, when everyone thinks the fire is out.

This VIX pop suggests someone is bidding up volatility protection, even as the broader market grinds higher. It could be short covering on existing hedges, or it could be smart money taking advantage of the rally to put on cheap protection. Either way, it's a yellow flag. The easy money often gets made when the VIX is sleeping, not when it's quietly stirring during a rally.

My Read for the Open

I'm leaning mildly bullish today, but with a serious asterisk. The positive gamma and strong futures bid are undeniable. If we can hold this early strength and see that VIXY flatten out or even dip, then the path of least resistance remains up. We need to see that VIXY print come back down to confirm the rally.

However, if that VIXY keeps creeping higher or spikes on the open, it tells me there's more fear bubbling under the surface than the headline numbers suggest. That's when you watch for the trap. The crowd is buying into strength, but someone else is quietly paying up for insurance. I'd want to see this VIXy move reverse before trusting this rally wholeheartedly. Watch for that divergence to widen or narrow as the bell rings.
